Wrangel island: across the top of the world

About program:

This unique expedition crosses the Arctic Circle and includes isolated Wrangel and Herald Islands and a significant part of the rugged coast of northeast Siberia. This trip has only been made possible in recent years by the thaw in regional politics and the summer deepening of the Arctic sea ice in the Chukchi Sea. There is small distance between Russia and the United States along this border area was known as the Ice Curtain, behind which then and now lies one of the last great undiscovered wilderness in the world.

The journey passes through the narrow Bering Strait, which separates Russia from the United States of America, then the route turns west along the Chukotka coast before crossing the Long Strait to Wrangel Island. There we will spend four to five days under the direction of local guards in the nature reserve.

Free from glaciers during the last ice age, this island is a treasure trove of arctic biodiversity and is perhaps best known for the multitude of polar bears that breed here. We hope to have many glimpses of this beautiful animal. The island is also a home for the world’s largest population of Pacific walruses and is close to major feeding grounds for gray whales that migrate thousands of miles north of their breeding grounds in Baja, Mexico. Reindeer, muskoxen and snow geese can normally be seen further inland. The number and type of endemic plant species, the diversity within plant communities, the presence of relatively recent mammoth tusks and skulls, a range of terrain types and geological formations in the small geographic space are all evidence visible from Wrangel’s rich natural history and uniqueness of evolution in the Arctic.

The history of the relationship between Wrangel Island and humans is more than 3400 years old and is fascinating in itself: the Paleo-Eskimo camp was located here, 15 people survived after the collapse of the Karluk brigantine, the courageous story of the heroine of Wrangel Island – Ada Blackjack, long-term disputes over the discovery and ownership of the island and a world-class nature reserve under the auspices of UNESCO. During the landings, you will learn many fascinating stories from the past of Wrangel Island. Our experienced expedition team will be with you along the entire route and will guide you to the most interesting places and during disembarkations, during cruises on the zodiacs, and will give lectures that will help you better understand and appreciate this unique region.

Day 1:Anadyr
All expedition members will arrive in Anadyr, the administrative centre of the Chukotka region, and transfer to your expedition vessel.Depending on the time of arrival, you may have the opportunity to explore Anadyr, before getting to know your fellow travelers and your expedition team aboard.
Wrangel island: across the top of the world
Day 2: Anadyrsky bay
This day spent at sea is devoted to briefings and conferences. There is also a chance to observe birds and cetaceans and get used to life aboard. For the afternoon, we are planning a zodiac ride over spectacular bird cliffs in Preobrajenia Bay.

Wrangel island: across the top of the world
Day 3: Grey whales and walruses
Yttygran Island is home to the ancient monumental aboriginal site known as Whale Bone Alley. The whales stretch along the beach for almost half a kilometer. Grey whales are frequently seen around the island, we also sail by Nuneangan and Arakamchechen islands where seabirds nest and where walruses can be found.

Wrangel island: across the top of the world
Day 4: The most northeastern village in Russia and Chukchi art
We land at Cape Dejnev early in the morning. The most northeastern point of the Eurasian continent, sometimes it is even possible to see the coast of America from this isolated and lonely outpost. A few nautical miles west of Cape Dejnev, we visit the village of Ouelen, the most northeastern village in Russia. The population is predominantly Chukchi and the village is one of the largest centers of traditional Chukchi and Inuit art in the world. We will be entertained by the villagers and visit the bone carving workshop during our tour.
Wrangel island: across the top of the world
Day 5: Koluychin island, birds cliffs
This tiny island was once a major Russian polar research station, and one of many dotted across the Arctic. Near the abandoned buildings are some of the most spectacular bird cliffs in the Arctic where puffins, murres and gulls can be observed and photographed up close.
Wrangel island: across the top of the world
Day 6-10: Wrangel and Herald islands
We will spend the next few days on Wrangel Island and also attempt to include a visit to nearby Herald Island. We can make many landings to discover the wildlife, wildflowers and landscapes of the Arctic. Polar bears will be at the top of our list of animals to see.

We also have the chance to visit the port of Dragui where the survivors of the Karluk (flagship of the Canadian Arctic expedition (1913-1916), refer to the loss of the ship and the death of nearly half of its crew after a long period of survival in arctic land

Wrangel Island is a Russian Federal Nature Reserve of international importance and importance, especially since it is an important polar bear calving ground. Additionally, thousands of birds migrate here each summer to breed, including snow geese, snowy owls, skuas, arctic terns, sabine gulls and ivory gulls.
Wrangel island: across the top of the world
Day 11: Siberian North Coast (Whales, walruses,Chukchi villages)
Bounded by narrow sandy ridges with numerous lagoons and coves, this area offers plenty of places to land and explore this vast coastline. We will be on the lookout for whales, walruses and other wildlife. We will see Chukchi villages whose inhabitants survive in a ruthless climate, hunting seals and whales just like their ancestors.

Wrangel island: across the top of the world
Day 12: Kolioutchine bay
So huge that it is visible on satellite photos, this bay contains a large number of water birds and migratory waders. We focus our visit on the Belaka Spit near the mouth of the creek. It is a wild and desolate landscape which is absolutely beautiful. We will search dunes and tidal areas for birds, including emperor geese and spoon-billed sandpipers. Gray whales frequent the area and are sometimes spotted feeding only a few meters offshore.

Wrangel island: across the top of the world
Day 13: Bering Strait and Chukotka Coast
Early in the morning we will pass the Diomedes Islands, sometimes referred to as Tomorrow Island and Yesterday Island, as they straddle the international date line. Here Russia and America are only separated by 2.3 nautical miles of ocean. We will stay on Russian territory as we sail south past the islands. Later that afternoon, we make an expedition disembarking on the Chukotka Coast, our last chance to enjoy the wildlife and tundra scenery.
Day 14: In the sea
This is time to relax during the crossing of Anadyrskiy Bay towards Anadyr.
Day 15: Anadyr
Breakfast is served aboard, and unfortunately it's time to say "see you soon!". There will be a free transfer to the airport or to a hotel in the city center.
